What breaks

This release changes default behavior and removes some tooling support.

  • Outgoing HTTP(s) connections now default to keepAlive: true with a 5 second waiting window, changing connection reuse behavior
  • Node.js HTTP servers now automatically disconnect idle keep-alive clients when close() is invoked
  • DTrace, SystemTap, and ETW support has been removed entirely
  • exports double slash maps now trigger a runtime deprecation warning
  • Coercion to integer in process.exit() now triggers a runtime deprecation warning
  • Minimum ICU version bumped to 71, which may affect builds depending on bundled ICU
  • webcrypto.Crypto.prototype.CryptoKey (non-standard) has been removed
  • crypto.setFips can no longer be called from a worker thread

What to do

Move to Node.js 19.0.0 to pick up these changes, testing HTTP client/server behavior given the new keep-alive default.

  • Remove any reliance on DTrace, SystemTap, or ETW tracing for Node.js processes
  • Update code using exports double slash maps to avoid the deprecation warning
  • Replace any integer coercion patterns passed to process.exit() with explicit integer values
  • Check for usage of webcrypto.Crypto.prototype.CryptoKey and update accordingly
  • Verify crypto.setFips calls are not made from worker threads
  • Confirm build environments meet the ICU 71 minimum if using system ICU

What the vendor said

Node.js 19.0.0 is now the Current release line. It bumps V8 to 10.7, updates llhttp to 8.1.0, enables HTTP(S) keep-alive by default, and removes DTrace/SystemTap/ETW support along with several other semver-major changes.
